MEDIA THAT IS A WASTE OF SPACE THESIS Essay.

Points:1) It reiterates old-fashioned and expired points that have been debunked and regresses progress. (Stereotypes [race, misogyny, ethinicity, sex],misconceptions). 2) It is not well made and no one had love for it while making it.(the creator of the fucking thing MUST want to make it to warrant it to exist), some statement about how art is a skill. 3)Oversaturation/Overflow of a concept like Ya Novels,Manga, Youtube videos, trying to capitalise on that success of a “new” idea(particular type of execution). Forgoes new ideas or new people in order to make easy money. No risks in this economy. 4)The audience is too large and it waters down the narrative. Interpretations can be counted on one hand because the audience has a guy that tells them what the media they just watched was about.

Why would a piece of media have no place in the world? In recent years, there has been a rise in media creation through the easier access to equipment and free education on the subject. Behind the scenes footage, asking creators for their process, trial and error etc were all valid pathways to creating a video or music or art. However, what media constitutes as useless, because it contains a large audience, oversaturation, faulty creation and regression of progress.

Beginning with catering to a large audience. Individuals have unique lives from each other, no one is cut from the same cloth, nevertheless we do have some similarities that we chose to highlight through written and spoken word. Relatability is a big factor that studios and other companies bet on to draw crowds with a promise that they will see themselves in their artpiece. Although expanding the reach for your audience is not always a good thing. Formal examples: Disney the last few years making vapid shit(sources). It is a fact that stories are overflowing with concepts that are uneeded but are placed there for extending the time the audience could have to do something better with their time or more meaningful. Formal example: movies 120mins at most now 180 and you have towatch 5 things beforehand. Therefore a large audience diludes the content we are watching.

Following it up with derivation content. When a creation comes out and you go to observe it, you find a million content derived along with it. Usually that content is amateur in nature and its budget is not the greatest while also having a gimmick that the creator of the video, music etc has as a signature. Examples include parody content which take the original and satirize it or criticize it or comment on its impact. Examples: Reviews, Parodies, Criticism, Reactions. While that is necessary to exist, it requires a certain level of education or expertise that most people have forgotten or never refreshed before telling their opinion. Furthermore the amount of plagiarism that happens in these spaces so individuals have the spotlight is absurd. Examples. Drama channels, Reaction videos, YA novels with the same concepts, same tropes in manga. Conclusion: Derivation content needs reasons to exist other than capitalising on another’s success. And there is something to say about stealing something from the already rich and powerful for yourself, just a piece. But still have some respect for the work you’re doing or subjecting other people to do and don’t make it vapid.

Another type of media that falls into the waste-of-space pit is a corporate cash-grab. This is media made without love, by people who have no care for it and only doing it for a paycheck. Someone has viewed things like corporate art like Google Doodle, or advertising that edges film-eque techniques but something is wrong about it, or anything by a business trying to sell you something. Business and Art cannot be combined politically speaking. Business is authoritarian and Art is socialist. For example: In Art spaces everything you need to be taken seriously is shared for free. In Business you have to pay to get that respect. That is not to say business advice cannot be shared as help, but you will need an advisor and maybe a second opinion. There are many failed businesses because they did not take business running advice. There are people who create a modest store and have a stable income from that but they are not interested in growing it and get disrespected for that choice. Conclusion: Any respect for businessing as an individual, comes from education and not accomplishments.

The last point is the most important in my opinion. In the endeavour to create you stumble upon a hurdle. What conflict will your characters suffer? And you think types of coflict and you arrive at stereotypical violence against their identity. Do not do this. First of all, it has been done, and you cannot make it as good as someone in the thousand years of theater and television has done after trials and tribulations in their creative career. As a new creator you have to indulge in historic texts about the thing you want to depict because one, you will not repeat their mistakes and two, you need to elevate beyond shallow depictions of stereotypes as shorthand for archetypes. If you are making something above baby levels at least you need to know why racism is bad and sexism oppresses women. Some of the points are expired and seeing for example, men forcing women to get in oppressive relationships with them is tiresome. It is also tiresome to not do research on ethnicities before depicting them in content and reiterating white-supremacy and colonialist points about them.

In conclusion, be careful what you depict and why, make sure you love the thing and want it to exist, take derived content with a grain of salt because they may not have experience or education on the topics they talk about and business art is souless and just exists as a monetarytrap
